As Romania continues to develop and improve, the demand for reliable transportation has increased. This is due to the region’s growing economy and the rise in people’s quality of life. One result of this growth is the rise of car-sharing and ride-sharing platforms.

For some people, however, buying a car is a pricey option. Even purchasing second-hand vehicles could be expensive, which is why most Romanians who prefer cheaper alternatives end up riding a bicycle or using public transportation and/or relying on car-sharing.

Riding a bicycle is eco-friendly since it does not contribute to pollution and promotes good health. But using it as a daily means of transportation could be exhausting and disadvantageous, especially during extreme climates like winter!

Travelling via public transportation is also a great idea. However, Due to the ongoing pandemic, using public transport can be risky today because it may involve close contact with other people. While it can be a convenient and affordable way to travel, it is important to consider the potential health risks and take necessary precautions to protect oneself and others.

If you are looking for alternative transportation options in light of the current pandemic, consider car-sharing.

Car-Sharing in Romania

Car-sharing services are becoming more popular than traditional taxis in Romania this year and are expected to increase in 2023. These platforms allow users to choose from a variety of vehicles, including options for different price ranges, fees, and locations. This flexibility makes car-sharing a convenient and cost-effective transportation option for many Romanians.

According to the Car-Sharing Association, the main purpose of these platforms is to promote a better environment and support social objectives rather than to generate business and financial gains.

In this blog post, we have compiled a list of some of the best car-sharing platforms in Romania. We have included information about the fees, coverage area, price range, and car brands each platform offers. We have also provided insights and comments on each platform to help you make an informed decision.

Carpool Romania is a platform that allows users to share car rides with others. It has a simple interface with only two options: search for a ride or list your vehicle for others to use. The platform has become popular in Romania, making it easy to find a car to share. However, it’s important to note that the vehicles available on the platform are not owned by Carpool but rather by individual users. This means that the quality and condition of the cars may vary. It is up to the individual to evaluate the suitability of a particular vehicle before agreeing to use it.

Carpool Romania is a great way to save money and reduce fuel consumption through car sharing. The platform allows you to share a car with other passengers for short or long trips, such as a journey from Bucharest to another region. Additionally, GDFrent provides 24/7 road assistance for tourists, which can help them navigate unfamiliar roads and handle any maintenance issues that may arise.

Conclusion

In conclusion, car sharing is a convenient and growing transportation option in Romania. However, the number of car-sharing platforms available in the country is limited. To fully realize the potential of car sharing in Romania, it would be beneficial for international car-sharing platforms to enter the market or for the current platforms to expand their service areas. This would increase the options available to travellers and potentially make car-sharing a more viable transportation choice for more people.

Inactive Car-Sharing Platforms in Romania

Over the past few years, car-sharing has become increasingly popular in Romania as a convenient and efficient means of transportation. It has also helped to make commuting in Romanian cities faster and more environmentally friendly. Many people are considering switching to car-sharing as a result. While many car-sharing platforms in Romania have seen significant growth, others have become inactive.

Some well-known and influential car-sharing platforms have had a positive impact on transportation in Romania. However, various factors have led to their decision to discontinue their services in the country.

PONY

Pony began as a car-sharing platform in the cities of Cluj and Alaba Iulia and later expanded its services to other cities in Romania besides Bucharest. However, the smaller size of cities like Cluj compared to Bucharest, as well as the lower demand for transportation, led Pony to reconsider its decision to operate in these areas.

Moreover, travel distances in Cluj are significantly shorter than in Bucharest. Some landmarks can be reached via walking or riding a bike, while others prefer to ride mass transit such as a bus or a tram. These reasons add to the decision for Pony to be ultimately inactive and discontinue its car-sharing service.

Currently, it is not possible to access Pony’s website, but their mobile app is still available for download.

Pony’s website: http://www.getpony.ro/en/

PONY had some of the best offers for car-sharing, including free charges and inclusive memberships. However, car-sharing is still in its early stages in certain parts of Romania.

FREE NOW

Free Now was also a ride and car-sharing platform operating in Romania for the last few years. Free Now was owned by  Daimler and BMW, acquiring Clever (a car-sharing platform before) when they entered the Romanian market. However, this 2022, Free Now mentioned that they will be leaving Romania for good.

“The representatives of Free Now, for reasons of commercial nature and business strategy, took the difficult decision to stop the activity of the digital platform Free Now in Romania;” source: Tylaz

Free Now announced to their users and partners that their service will end after June 30, 2022.

Future of Car-Sharing in Romania

Car-sharing in Romania has continued to expand, although at a slow pace due to the ongoing pandemic. The crisis has demonstrated the convenience and user-friendliness of car-sharing, and it has a bright future in the country. It may overtake traditional modes of transportation in the coming years. However, for this vision to be realized, car-sharing services must become more accessible to people across the country.

Car-sharing Platforms in Other Countries that would Fit in Romania, too!

Car-sharing in Romania brings ease and convenience to transportation, especially in Bucharest, where all types of car-sharing are available. However, despite the demands of other Romanian cities, only a few car-sharing platforms can reach these cities. It would be great to have more car-sharing platforms in Cluj or Timisoara!

People also prefer car rental over car-sharing — though both offer a convenient vehicle for a fee, they have entirely different objectives and methods for providing a vehicle.

Since car-sharing is becoming a trend in modern transportation this 2023, it has spread globally, especially in highly populated parts of Europe, the United States, and Asia. In Europe, several known car-sharing services provide their service in neighbouring countries, such as Hungary, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, etc. These car-sharing platforms will greatly benefit Romania if they become available in other countries since it provides people with various choices and platforms while helping Romania solve transportation demands.

In this section, we will look into the international car-sharing platforms that could be best when brought to Romania.

  1. SIXT

Sixt is currently operating in Romania and offers car rental services. The company has expanded quickly in Europe and has transitioned from car rental to car-sharing in recent years. At present, Sixt offers car-sharing services in Germany and the Netherlands. The company is expected to bring its car-sharing services to Romania in the coming years.

sixt car-sharing

Sixt car-sharing provides one-way car-sharing. Most Sixt users find it convenient when returning the car-for-shared since Sixt has stations established nationwide. In Romania, Sixt has branches near major airports.

Sixt is available through a website and mobile application, which allows users to reserve a car for up to 15 minutes free of charge. Using the app, users can unlock the vehicle and drive immediately.

If you are curious about Sixt car-sharing fees in Germany and Netherlands, they can be categorized into three types: (1) travel across town, (2) SUV, and (3) weekend getaway. The exact amount of these fees may vary depending on the specific location and vehicle type. It is recommended to visit Sixt’s website or contact the company directly for more detailed information on car-sharing fees.

Travel across town: Sixt users can travel around the city with a fee starting at 0.44 RON per minute.

SUV: Users can use shared cars if they need more seats for their family or friends, starting at 290 RON daily.

Weekend getaway: Having a leisurely weekend with a shared car starts at 684 RON for a three-day trip.

Sixt provides various car brands and gives users many options, such as Audi, Volkswagen, Renault, Seat, Leon, Skoda, MINI, BMW, Hyundai, Opel, Jaguar, and Nissan. In addition, Sixt offers shared cars that can be used for 27 days. Only a few car-sharing platforms allow that kind of long-term sharing!

2. SHARE NOW

After shutting down operations in the United States and three major European cities, Share Now shifted its focus on car-sharing in European countries, such as Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, and Spain.

car-sharing

The car-sharing platforms Share Now and Free Now are both owned by Daimler. Free Now was available in Romania before it became inactive, while Share Now is still unavailable in the country. However, if Share Now decides to operate in Romania, it will replace the service provided by Free Now before – providing ease of travel, continuing to expand its service in other Romanian cities, and allowing users to access a wider variety of vehicles.

While most Romanian car-sharing platforms are either round-trip car-sharing or one-way car-sharing, Share Now allows users to freely return the shared vehicle anywhere on the streets, thus providing convenience to its users. This is an example of free-floating car-sharing where there are no dedicated stations, and users can easily find nearby cars at their location.

In Share Now, users can choose up to four categories of car-sharing rates, depending on their needs:

Minute rate: Users can use shared cars with pay-per-minute schemes starting at 0.94 RON. This is an ideal rate for users who want to have a vehicle for up to two hours and a distance of 200 km.

Hourly rate: Share Now allows users to use shared cars for over a day, starting at 27.93 RON per hour. While the allowed travel distance is unlimited; however, it starts at 0.94 RON per kilometre.

Daily rate: Shared cars are also available if you plan to drive daily, starting at 98.51 RON per day and 0.94 RON per kilometre. Pre-booking is exclusive only to the daily rate, allowing users to pre-book a car. Share Now will deliver the car to their preferred schedule and location.

Monthly Subscriptions: Share Now added a new rate that would benefit frequent users with a monthly subscription. Clients will save 50% if they go on a monthly subscription compared to the pay-per-minute rate. A monthly subscription costs 147.71 RON and can be cancelled anytime.

Fees included in the car-sharing platform include parking, fuel, and insurance. Before each trip, users should choose the rate they want in the app and pay only for what they use.

Share Now offers premium cars, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, MINI, and smart, which users can drive anytime and anywhere because the company also offers 24/7 availability in the countries where they operate.

Romania has a lot of car-sharing users that typically use shared cars for only short periods. On the other hand, Share Now is a good deal for a pay-per-minute rate since it offers many benefits.
